Welcome to The Puzzler. Every week, there are 2 new puzzles related to my passion: math, logic, and thinking. The first puzzle will be The Puzzler Quik, meant for those who crave something fun-sized. The second puzzle will be The Puzzler Think, meant for those who love to ponder. The answers will be posted in next week’s column. Don’t forget to submit your answer for a potential shout-out in the next edition of the Puzzler.
Puzzler Quik
If the whole number age of a father is multiplied by the whole number age of his son, one obtains 2015. Both are born in the 19th century. How big is the age gap between father and son?
Puzzled?
We know that the age gap must be less than 100. Try finding the prime factorization of 2015.
There are only 2 factors of 2015 that multiply to 2015 and have a difference of less than 100 in them.
Calculate and simplify: $$\sqrt{i}$$
Puzzled?
Try letting the square root equal a + bi and then try to find a and b
For 2 complex numbers to be equal, the real parts must equal each other, and the imaginary parts must equal each other!
