The Puzzler – Week 18

Registration is now open for the next contest!

Welcome to The Puzzler. Every week, there are 2 new puzzles related to my passion: math, logic, and thinking. The first puzzle will be The Puzzler Quik, meant for those who crave something fun-sized. The second puzzle will be The Puzzler Think, meant for those who love to ponder. The answers will be posted in next week’s column. Don’t forget to submit your answer for a potential shout-out in the next edition of the Puzzler.

Puzzler Quik

You are eating at Emile’s restaurant and the waiter informs you ´
that you have (a) two choices for appetizers: soup or juice; (b) three for the main
course: a meat, fish, or vegetable dish; and (c) two for dessert: ice cream or cake.
How many possible choices do you have for your complete meal?

Puzzled?

Each choice is independent from the others!

Multiplication is involved!

Puzzler Think

In how many ways can you arrange 5 keys on a key-chain?

Puzzled?

Think of a key as a circle that is allowed to be flipped…

Factorials are involved!

Last Week's Puzzler Quik

Sejal from Hyderabad, India was the winner of this shout-out.

You know what is better than a written explanation? A video!

Last Week's Puzzler Think

This week’s shout out goes to Emily from NY! Kudos to her!

The first 100 counting numbers are 1,2,3,4…100, so the sum is 1+2+3…+100. Working this out by hand would be a nightmare, but instead, we notice that 1+100=2+99=3+98…..=101. Since there are 100 numbers, there are 50 pairs that add up to 101. So, the sum is 50*101=5050.
