The Puzzler – Week 15

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on our next contest!

Welcome to The Puzzler. Every week, there are 2 new puzzles related to my passion: math, logic, and thinking. The first puzzle will be The Puzzler Quik, meant for those who crave something fun-sized. The second puzzle will be The Puzzler Think, meant for those who love to ponder. The answers will be posted in next week’s column. Don’t forget to submit your answer for a potential shout-out in the next edition of the Puzzler.

Don’t  forget to check out our new Youtube channel. It features videos about topics that boggle us all!

Puzzler Quik

How many zeros are at the end of 1000!(that is a factorial)?

Stuck on this problem? Try watching our Youtube video that covers factorials.

Puzzled?

Think about what produces a zero and in a factorial.

Try watching the video!

Puzzler Think

You know 2 + 2 comes to the same as 2 x 2. Now find a set of three different whole numbers whose sum is equal to their total when multiplied. What is the sum of these 3 numbers?

Puzzled?

Can you put some restrictions on the numbers?

The numbers are small!

Last Week's Puzzler Quik

Vidhu from Plano, Texas was the winner of this shout-out.

Here is an explanation:

The pattern was simple if you noted it. Notice that each outer number is sum of the two sectors that are opposite of it. For example, 11 was the sum of 7 and 4.

Thus, ? was the sum of 9 and 8, giving us our answer of $$9+8=17$$

Last Week's Puzzler Think

This week’s shout out goes to Alexander from Hillsdale, New Jersey! Kudos to him!

There was no best way to solve this problem. Basically, we can restrict our answer to digits that are valid if they are flipped and try casework from there. Doing that, we get our answer of 86!
