The Puzzler – Week 13

MORE information has been sent on our contest!

Welcome to The Puzzler. Every week, there are 2 new puzzles related to my passion: math, logic, and thinking. The first puzzle will be The Puzzler Quik, meant for those who crave something fun-sized. The second puzzle will be The Puzzler Think, meant for those who love to ponder. The answers will be posted in next week’s column. Don’t forget to submit your answer for a potential shout-out in the next edition of the Puzzler.

Puzzler Quik

ThePuzzlr contest has 350 participants. 15% of the participants forgot about the contest. 5% of the people had on-the-spot errors and thus could not take the test. If 30 people signed-up on the registration day, how many total contest-takers were there were there?

Puzzled?

Come on, try your best!

Puzzler Think

Puzzled?

The difference in their ages is constant.

Can you find Lucy’s age from the first statement?

Last Week's Puzzler Quik

Neel from Illinois was the winner of this shout-out.

We know that the discount is 15% of the original haircut. 15% of $5 is $0.75. The new haircut price is thus $5-$.75=$4.25. We also know that the tax rate is 10% of the new haircut price. 10% of $4.25 is $.425. Thus, we have  $4.25+$.425 = $4.675. Adding in the $2 tip, we have $2+$4.675, giving us our answer $6.675 or $6.68!

Last Week's Puzzler Think

This week’s shout out goes to Zanga from California! Kudos to her!

I could go on and on about this problem, but I think the following website does an excellent job explaining the problem. The correct answer is 42.
