The Puzzler – Week 12

Note: MORE information to follow on our contest soon!

Welcome to The Puzzler. Every week, there are 2 new puzzles related to my passion: math, logic, and thinking. The first puzzle will be The Puzzler Quik, meant for those who crave something fun-sized. The second puzzle will be The Puzzler Think, meant for those who love to ponder. The answers will be posted in next week’s column. Don’t forget to submit your answer for a potential shout-out in the next edition of the Puzzler.

Are you interested in math and puzzles? Do you like winning money? Well, why not participate in ThePuzzlr Contest, a 40-minute, 30 questions test for all ages that will be available to take via our website! We even have a sample test to help you get a feel of the problems! If you have already signed up, be sure to share this with as many friends as you can.

Puzzler Quik

A haircut costs $5 before tax and discounts. If I am also charged a 10% tax and I have a 15% discount on the original haircut price, what is my total cost(don’t forget that I also gave a $2 tip(I am pretty benevolent)).

Puzzled?

Come on, try your best!

Puzzler Think

What is the expected number of rolls that it will take you to get 2 6’s in a row on a standard die(you only have one die)?

Puzzled?

What is the probability of rolling 2 6’s in a row, in two rolls?

Make some equations!

Last Week's Puzzler Quik

Siddharth from Illinois was the winner of this shout-out.

We have a total of 100 participants who love puzzles more than math. The number of non-US participants is 50. We want to maximize the number of non-US participants who love puzzles more than math. In other words, we want to minimize the number of US participants who love puzzles more than math as the problem statement asked.

To maximize the number of non-US participants who love puzzles more than math, we can let each of the 50 Non-US participants like puzzles more than math! We still have 50 puzzle-lovers that are left over. They must be from the U.S, as there is no other place for them to go. Thus, our answer is 50.

Last Week's Puzzler Think

This week’s shout out goes to Layla from Iowa! Kudos to her!

Here is a way to do this problem:

  • 3/5 of the time, we will pick a white marble from bag A. This will give us 5 white marbles in bag B.
  • 2/5 of the time, we will pick a black marble from bag A. This will not change the number of white marbles in bag B, and we will still have 4 white marbles.
  • Thus, our expected value is $$\frac{3}{5}\cdot5+\frac{2}{5}\cdot4=\frac{23}{5}.$$
  • Thus, our answer is 23/5=4.6
